Security Engineering Research Group (SERG) is the first-ever Pakistan-based research group specializing in security engineering. The group focuses on highly specialized topics of security such as trusted computing, access control and security in opensource mobile platforms. These areas are of prime concern to the current scenarios of computing present in Pakistan. These scenarios include high-level projects such as e-government as well as low-level ones such as the industrialization and dynamic collaborations among industries. The group works on different fronts related to security engineering. On one hand, the group works on purely research level addressing the issues faced by the leading researchers of the world. On the other hand, the group gives ample time to the implementation and realization of security aspects relevant to the international research and to the national requirements. The research group focuses on different areas of security such as trusted computing, secure mobile ad-hoc applications and theoretical background of access control models and secure web services.

SERG has extensively defined a long term strategy as well as short term objectives for improving the quality of research in Pakistan in general and N-W.F.P in particular. The long term strategy of SERG includes defining new ways of improving research, education and industry-academia collaboration through national and international collaborations with industry and academia. This strategy is well complemented by the short term objectives. The immediate objectives of SERG include:

  1. Gathering up-to-date knowledge of cutting-edge research in the field of security engineering, access control, opensource mobile platforms and trusted computing.
  2. Linkages with international research groups and industries.
  3. Participation in International and national conferences and symposiums.
  4. Contributions to the society

The Group maintains its website in the form of a blog and invites any and all to visit and participate in the group activities.

Current Projects

SERG is currently working on a project titled, "Dynamic Behavioral Attestation for Mobile Platforms" in collaboration with Dr. Xinwen Zhang at the Samsung Information Systems America (SISA).

Research objectives of the project are "to develop a dynamic remote attestation technique [hardware-based security mechanism] for diverse computing environments enabled by mobile platforms and to implement remote attestation on mobile platforms".

The primary academic objective of the project is to create an environment where students can work on modern and applied research in state-of-the-art security technologies for mobile devices, PDAs and smart phones.

Details about the project can be seen at the DBAMP project homepage. Resources related to the project will be posted in this wiki with top-level links appearing on the project homepage.

Writing Guidelines

Please follow the following guidelines while editing pages on the SERG wiki.

  1. Post original content only. Anything that is copied must be put in quotes and properly cited. Use the same Intellectual Property rules as you do in research papers.
  2. Write clearly and legibly. Observe all the basic grammar rules. Capitalize the first letter of each sentence.
  3. Use clear formatting.
  4. Use Heading 1 style from the top of the editor for top level headings. Do not bold/underline/italicize headings. Leave the heading style as it is. Only use bolds and italic fonts for emphasis
  5. Do not copy/paste from Word (or any other word processor). If you must copy, paste first in notepad. Then copy from notepad and paste it here. This would get rid of the custom formatting and allow you to properly format the text here. This might give you an error if there are "smart quotes" or smart apostrophes (the curled single and double quotes word processors insert when you type double or single quote characters) in your text. You'll have to get rid of them yourself before submitting any changes.
  6. Preferably, spell check your writing or use a browser which spell-checks automatically while editing.

Differentiating between the Wiki and the Blog

We need to figure out what goes in the Wiki and what goes in the Blog. Here's what I think:

  • Everything that isn't going to change much (such as publications) needs to go into the blog.
  • Everything that requires collaboration should go into the Wiki. Prime example: Tutorials and how-tos
  • User profiles can be on the wiki if any member doesn't want to create their own site/blog. Otherwise, there should be a link to the user page. Everyone's responsible for making their own profile page.
  • Project information which might be useful to the general public (now and in the future) should go into the blog. This would include presentations, technical reports etc. We can provide a link to these in the wiki.

Remember that the purpose of the wiki, in our case, is to allow members to create content collaboratively.

Why is Public Editing Disabled

We're currently testing this wiki for our purposes and we can't give time to mediation. So, we're keeping this wiki closed for some time. If you want to participate, just send an email to user User:Recluze and he'll get back to you.
